Activist: Equity and Representation

My passion within the arts intersect between performance, community, and activism. I am committed to pursuing a vocation that allows me to be a part of meaningful work to bolster equity and representation in society, especially in the theatre scope. Below you will find the work I have and continue to engage in. As for justice-based work outside of theatre, I have always been involved in community-based grassroots organizations and in the Episcopal Church and am dedicated to continually educating myself.

“The Count” for Liberal Arts Colleges

In August of 2020, Landin Eldridge, David Lee, Katie Stewart, Dr. Sharon Green, and I published research documenting the demographics (gender and race) of playwrights whose plays were produced at 25 liberal arts colleges on HowlRound in an attempt to shed light on the lack of parity found within the 2020-2021 season.

Counting Together

In January of 2021, our article (linked above) was picked up by The Dramatists Guild of America in New York for a collaborative project on which they— and many others— were working. With an incredible group of creatives passionate about equity and representation in theatre, a few months, and a number of Zoom meetings later— the “Counting Together” website went live.
Counting Together is host to numerous data-driven findings in order to “identify and forge pathways to greater equity and inclusion” in American theatre. It is such an honor to have our research on this site, and it is a personal honor to be a part of the coalition that continues to discuss and grow the project.

Counting Together Recognized

In January of 2022, Counting Together (via the American Theatre Wing) was announced as a finalist for recognition by the inaugural Anthem Awards, a new initiative by the Webbys to recognize social impact work.
And…we WON! Counting Together was recognized for two Anthem Awards:
* Counting Together - Community Engagement; Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion - Partnership or Collaboration – GOLD
* Counting Together - Awareness Categories (Not-For-Profit); Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion - Partnership or Collaboration – SILVER

It is thrilling to see that this work is continuing to grow in its reach and is being recognized! There is still much work to be done to create more equity and representation in theatre, and I am so grateful to be a part of this project.

Delegate to the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church

I was elected as a delegate to represent the Diocese of Southern Virginia at the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church held in Austin, TX in 2018. This triennial convention occurs to vote on legislative matters within the church. This convention’s most notable bill was B012, which passed to authorize same-sex couples to be married in the church. I am proud to been a part of this historic vote!
